Eat What: Providing Precious Information about the Food that You Eat Daily written
Friday, March 4, 2016
Nowadays, it can be pretty hard to keep track of what we eat due to the apparent fast pace of our modern lifestyles. Oftentimes, we don’t even care what food we’re being served as long as it’s tasty and can fill us up in no time. This shouldn’t at all be the case because this would only ever lead to poor nutritional awareness. And, if you’re kept in the dark about something as important as the food you eat on a daily basis, how could you better manage your health? What’s good is that there are now apps that let you know the nutritional value of your food by simply scanning it. Eat What is a good example of such an app.
Eat What prioritizes in knowing what you eat, as it is an app that practically identifies your food. With Eat What’s built-in barcode scanner, for instance, you will always be in the know of just what the ingredients are in the food you eat and if they provide any nutrition in any way. This is made possible by the app’s regularly updated ingredients database, which promptly displays the safety level and nutritional value of each ingredient. The data is presented in an E-numbered format for easy reading.
Nowadays, almost all the items in most supermarkets have their own corresponding barcodes. With the app running, click on the Label tab then take a snapshot of the barcode. It would then proceed to scan it then display the ingredients found in the food. Take note that certain barcodes may not be detected properly by the app yet. You could rely on taking a snapshot of ingredients label instead. The app may not be able to read the entire label but it is fairly accurate in discerning most labels, especially if the shot taken is clear and with visible words. Clicking on a single ingredient on the list would promptly give you vital nutritional information about it.
The app is not all about scanning, though, as you can just proceed to type in the name of the ingredient in the app and it would display the information that you need if the said ingredient has already been entered into the database. You can also keep up with the latest news about food and nutrition within the Eat What interface. Furthermore, the OCR scan feature lets you check the nutrients of each food by scanning a photo of the ingredient labels found in most commercially packaged food. You can take the picture of any label nad OCR will do the rest of the work.
Other noteworthy features include speech recognition and the Diet Store. In the former you need only to say the ingredients out loud to know what it is, sparing you the need to scan it. It is also especially useful if your food doesn’t have an available bar code. The latter, on the other hand, allows you to create your own nutrition profiles. With it, you can easily plan your diet with every ingredient that you scan. Being a Diet Store, you can also purchase special diets prepared by health experts from it; you need only to enter information regarding your age, overall health, and food preferences to make it easier for you to choose. Incidentally, you can also update your dietary requirements in the app through speech as well, and you can even share your own ideas through the app on social media sites like Facebook.
Eat What goes to show that there’s always a way to be on top of things when it comes to your health. Another plus for this app is that it’s available in both iOS and Android platforms. It even has a Lite version for the iOS, which is free but with limited features. Hence, you can never have an alibi to ignore your diet. If it’s compared to other apps that have similar functions, Eat What certainly stands out with its speech recognition capability and comprehensive nutrition profiles. Its scanning capabilities are akin to most recognition apps, but the similarity is limited to that alone. This is why if you’ve been constantly disappointed by your current diet and nutrition app, this could prove to be an answer to your prayers.
