Android App of the Day - Colorfy app, a colouring book for adults

Thursday, December 10, 2015

This app really caught my eye, because I recently read that colouring is an excellent stress-relieving activity for adults. And here you thought colouring books are only for kids. Well you were wrong. Adults can have just as much fun colouring as kids (maybe even more), I know I do and I find it’s a great way to boost your creativity. It’s not quite the same as using a real piece of paper and crayons, but it’s the next best thing, especially if you have some time to kill and only have your phone to keep you busy.

So this is how you start: Install the app from either play store or apkmonk. you have several albums available, from florals, animals, mandalas and oriental patterns, to cat pictures, inspiring messages and even famous works by famous painters (you can colour in the Mona Lisa or Edvard Munch’s The Scream, if you wish) and much more. They are also updating their archive regularly and adding new things for you to colour in every week. But be careful, if you want to use this app for free, you are not going to get all the features and a lot of colouring books will be off limits. At first I chose the Mona Lisa, only to be redirected to a 7-day free trial pop-up window, which offers unlimited access to all images for 3,28 EUR per week. And in order to get that free trial, you must first provide your credit card information, which I was not all too keen to do.

So I chose another picture, a free one, and started my artistic voyage. And it’s just so easy to use. You choose the colours you want and begin filling in the white spaces. In the top right corner you have a row of pencils where you can change colours, while in the top left corner you see the last three colours you used. And to colour the picture, you simply pinch the screen to zoom in or out (like you would normally do on your mobile phone) to colour in all those little shapes on your design. And if you don’t feel that creative flare, you can always tap on the “get inspired” icon at the bottom to see what masterpieces other people have created.

You can also share your creations and add special filters to your design, like brick, leather, paper, wood or wool filter to make it just a bit more special. You can even remove those pesky lines that you coloured in to get a “real” looking picture. And you can also unlock other design patterns by sharing your creations.

What makes this app so great is that you don’t need wi-fi to use it. So if you’re bored, without Internet and have some time to kill on your commute, then this app is right for you. As I’ve previously mentioned, colouring is a great stress reliever and therapeutic as well. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, you should give it a go and watch the hours fly by.
