Listen to articles and RSS Feeds on your Android device
Wednesday, July 24, 2013
Reading articles sometimes can become boring and
exhausting (especially for the eyes), or sometimes time and responsibilities can
be big burden. So, if you want to listen to articles, latest updates from your
RSS Feeds, podcast feeds or PDF files while you are in car, bus, metro or any
other place, then SoundGecko is probably the best solution for you.
SoundGecko is the Android app from the website www.soundgecko.com.
It is also available for iOS and it is really remarkable service and definitely
one of the best, if not the best, text to speech software.
How to setup and use it
After you download the app, you will need to subscribe. Your
account will be synced with various platforms and cloud storages like Google
Drive, Dropbox etc. But, if you want to add RSS feeds and podcast feeds to your
Android device, you must use your account on the website.
The app has two basic categories: Playlist and Featured. The
playlist is where you will add articles from any webpage you want and place
where you will receive the updates from your RSS Feeds. Featured, are already pre-selected
articles from famous, authority websites.
How to add articles from your phone or tablet
Adding articles is similar to Pocket. When you open one
webpage, find the share button in your browser and tap add to SoundGecko. After that, you will have the article
instantly on your app, available for listening. But, you will need internet
connection in order to listen to the articles.
You can select between Paul and Bridget, male or female
reader of the articles. I personally enjoyed Bridget more, but, they are both
excellent and they sound very natural, clear and precise.
SoundGecko isn’t totally free. It offers 30 articles per day
and if you want more, plus reading of PDF files and 2 additional voices, then
you will have to pay $2.95 per month.
Another solid app that also has text to speech technology is
the popular Pocket, that I’ve already mentioned previously in the article and
on Intellectuapp. This app lets you grab any article, or video from the web,
that you can later read, watch or listen in offline mode. But, their text to
speech is nowhere near to SoundGecko. The voices are way too robotic and
unnatural.
